If we could get the Conservatives to commit to reversing the legislation, it would be worth hedging our bets and betting on Labour to win the next election.
Suppose you currently owe £100k. If you put £10k on Labour to win then at 9/1 that would return £100k, leaving you with £90k after you had paid the tax demand.
If the Conservatives win, then you would lose £10k, still leaving you with £90k.

Lets wrap it all up in a nice financial derivative, put a pretty bow on it and give it a three letter acronym like CDO.'Orwell's 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not an instruction manual'. -

I registered on an excellent property website a couple of months ago (Zoopla!) that very kindly emails me every month and tells me how much my house has fallen in price.
I just slipped into negative equity.

FAB Campaign Update
What we've achieved so far.
1) Over 200 people have written to their MPs, and new people are contacting me every week for the initial letter.
2) At least 100 letters from MPs must now be sat unanswered at the Treasury. There are several versions of the letter covering different angles, making it difficult for them to issue a blanket response.
3) We have registered on the Tory radar screens. Tory Central office has provided MPs with a standard response if they are contacted about S58.
4) We have begun countering the Tory "no promises to reverse legislation" message.
5) Several MPs have taken up our cause. Ed Davey (LD) described S58 as "immoral"; John Redwood (Con) called it "legalised theft".
6) Nearly 550 people have signed the petition so far.
7) We have discovered useful info through FOI which has been passed to Montpelier, Steed and PwC. More requests are in the pipeline.
What next
8) We need to step up the pressure on the Tories to change their stance. If you get a letter from a Tory MP saying they can't promise to reverse the legislation, contact me for the "tory no promises" letter.
9) We must keep hassling the Treasury until they respond to our letters.
If it is several weeks since your MP passed it on to the Treasury, contact me for a "chase the treasury" letter.
10) We need all MPs to refer the matter to the Treasury. If your MP has not done that, then contact me for a "not referred to treasury" letter.
Keep fighting!!!
PS. Officially, FAB stands for Fight Against BN66, but the "B" is open to interpretation.

Email from MP
I followed up the initial quick response I got from my MP (Jeffrey Donaldson) with an email link to the petition. He replied with an email saying that he will be taking time to study and note the detail on the petition and the people affected. He finished by saying that he would continue to press for a response. The petition will let him see how many people are affected (550signatures in a couple of week! Good job DR). I think that gives a bigger impact than just the letter on its on.
