I was assured that this scheme had worked since 1987 and although it was expected at some budget in the future that it might be closed down there was never any mention that they already had 500 plus under enquiry and certianly no warning about possible retrospection.
In fact I had a newsletter from MontP after the 2006 budget saying that the scheme was still safe.
I for one would not have continued using the scheme if either MontP or HMRC and brought the dispute to our attention.Comment

Advice
From what I can gather, less than half of the closure notices have been received. For those of you who have yet to receive your closure notices, read on so that you know what to expect:
- Some of the “closure notices” that I received did not actually have the words “Closure Notice” on the piece of paper.
- Some closure notices that were raised against me were never sent to me by the tax inspector. The inspector admitted that he had not sent them. But no apology was forthcoming.
- Some closure notices include a calculation of tax, other just have number on them.
- I have received statements of account for amounts of money that are completely unrelated to any tax “due” by me.
- I have received “debt notices” as a first contact.
- I have received threats of legal action – even though every letter received has been immediately responded to.
- Calling the tax office doesn’t help, they even claimed the person that sent me a letter did not work there. “never heard of him”
- Some of the statements received did not add up – really, you couldn’t make this stuff up.
It is quite clear that HMRC’s computers have a great deal of difficulty dealing with what they are doing (they should get an independent IT consultant in to fix them). It is also clear the HMRC’s staff are unable to cope. They are clearly being told what to do by the likes of Brannigan, and I can only pity their position.
Hopefully my remaining closure notices will arrive soon.
If you have yet to receive yours, keep the above in mind – expect HMRC to really make a mess of it and be ready for them. Stay clam. I could go through HMRC’s service standard and demonstrate that they have failed on almost every point.

my biggest fear...verging on paranoia...is that when MrB does get around to sending my CN out that it gets lost in the post...Ive heard that CNs are going out via pathetic 2nd Class post...I'm a heavy user of Royal Mail and I know thru first hand experience how many letters/parcels RM lose - believe me, its a lot...
as a result, I find myself logging onto to the Government Gateway on a weekly basis to check my account and ensure that I don't suddenly have £10000s owing...
Donkey...is is worth putting a link to Toocan's post on the first page?

While the letters/notices that HMRC send out are scary - and are designed to be - they do not have as much power as they'd like you to believe. The key is to take action and stay on their case. These guys are like school bully's - you know how to deal with them.

If I get any of this nonsense or, worse, I'll be straight round to the
parliamentary ombudsmens office. I know for a fact the revenue LOVE
having these guy snooping round!

However, scheme promoters are required to disclose information to HMRC about schemes falling within certain statutory descriptions. HMRC has investigated or is currently investigating more than 90 promoters suspected of failing to comply with a disclosure obligation.
