"Tax evasion is easy: it involves breaking the law. By tax avoidance OECD means unacceptable avoidance ... This can be contrasted with acceptable tax planning. What is critical is transparency" - Donald Johnston, Secretary-General, OECD
I've just been going back through the evidence she gave to the Treasury Committee.
Either she was totally misled by HMRC and/or her officials, or the woman deserves to rot in hell.
Those of you who have seen the document I submitted to the JCHR, will appreciate why I'm pulling no punches.
"I am satisfied that in these unusual circumstances, retrospective clarification of the law is fair, proportionate and in the public interest. That is the human rights test that we must apply."
"I am happy and content, given the advice that I have received, that the decision I am asking the Committee to make today is right."
"I believe that we can pass the clause with a clear conscience."

Just received one from HMRC. It said I've overpaid by over £3K.
So I called them to say "show me the money" and was told that my account has been suspended due to an investigation AND that I'm unable to withdraw funds NOR am I able to pay money in, i.e. paying on account.

You should ask for that in writing, as basically you could argue that you intended to pay but wasnt allowed thus, the interest they have applied should be removed.
Not that we are going to have to pay anything.
