So what happens if I don't submit self assessment ?

    Hi

I'm leaving the country soon in about three months. My self assesment is due but I'm wondering whether I should even bother. So what do you guys think will happen if I simply don't submit a return ?

Will you EVER return? Where are you going to?

My gf went to HK in 2001 and came back in 2004. Took my accountant a while to patch things up with HMRC. Though my accountant was open and honest with them they just went into bully boy mode - she owed £2000 (including penalties and interest) and they started demanding £60 per day extra penalty. Accountant said it was very unfair but legal.

Pay the money you owe. It's such a nice feeling when you know they've no reason to contact you ever again.
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

Unless you are cutting ALL ties with the UK including clearing your bank accounts, selling your house etc etc and can 100% guarantee that you will never ever return I would definitely return the SA and pay what you earn

Tax avoidance (not paying what they think you owe) good. Tax evasion (not paying what you know you owe, or what the courts would think you owe) bad.

WHS. And there are many countries with mutual tax treaties to pick up the odd miscreant; governments don't seem to like tax evaders for some reason and will jail you on behalf of your previous country...

Switzerland will jail you. But they'll let you keep the money...

I bet Swiss prisons are cushier than ours.
