I was more thinking it could be put sort of put like this, please dont pick the phrase below apart, u get the jist:

The government seem to be adopting a trend of introducing retrospectively tax measures in recent Car tax changes and budget note 66 which affects small businesses by changing legislation from 1987. Such measures are considered by a large number of institutions to set a dangerous precedent. What do the panel think?

That I can agree with. My objection would be anything that appeared to support a UK worker paying less than UK-standard taxation on UK-generated income... It may be entirely legal, but it would be a bloody awful move politically!
      Blog? What blog...?

How is considering getting a "quote me happy" from HMRC for their liability ?

I doubt there are many freelancers (outside IR35) who are paying "UK-standard taxation" on "UK-generated income". OK, it is not as extreme as the offshore schemes but if you asked a lot of people they would still considerd it unfair.

Personally I am not convinced the car tax changes are retrospective. People can sell their car if they want to. But if it helps the bn66 thing then I will fight it all the way!

Brillo, by using that as an initial example I was sneaking BN66 in through the back door, well that was the intention anyway. The general public can associate with car tax which creates a mini rally of opinion, probably not so easily with just quoting BN66 raw

God, Im starting to sound like a politician!!!!

                Re-opening earlier years

I talked to my mate who had a tax return opened after the 12 month dead-line had passed, and he said they justified it on the following basis.

If there is not enough info/detail on the return, then HMRC can later claim that they could not reasonably have been expected to enquire based on the information provided. If subsequently more information comes to light then they can legally re-open prior years.

In other words, they can open enquiries retrospectively. Sound familiar?

At a reduced price because of retrospective legislation reducing their value!

hmmm - I like it! Sounds a bit like the f4j campaign - only a few of us were ever active(most men are such idiots). But they have a PR/Marketing chap and a media chap who are both amazing - the press are so easy to manipulate.

Now - here is a recycled idea. We run naked to number 10. Sell it to the press as Downing Streak!
