Ask yourself the following question. How did HMRC become aware of the MTM Scheme even before any tax returns had been filed? Answer: probably because someone (with a grudge) tipped them off.

I would not be surprised if Mr Jones still bears a grudge. After all, MTM went on to make millions out of the scheme, whereas he got hauled up in court and had to close his rival scheme. I don't think you will find many in his scheme have a good word to say about him. And, to add insult to injury, having let all these people down, he then goes and sets up ir35amnesty.com.

It does not surprise me that he wants the Revenue to go after MTM but I think you have to wonder what his motives really are.
you hit the nail right on the head for me, hmrc never asked me a single question about my return, i was simply put in the file marked 'mtm' one day. always had a feeling i and many 'early' scheme members had been shopped to hector. personally i've decided to steer clear of tw, already making enquiries to borrow the money (in my case not too crippling as my rate was not that high and i was in it for 2 years between 2001 -2002) and get ctd and see what the outcome is. not very happy about paying interest though on a tax bill i've never received.....

Theres quite a lot they can do. It used to be the case that they couldn't make you homeless.

I wonder if they would accept a second charge on my home so when I eventually come to sell it they get their wedge.....makes it less painful as I wouldnt actually be handing over the money in person....

PS - thats a pretty normal process for debt recovery

A relation of mine had a tax charge of £40k put on them and HMRC didn't give a damn how he got the money, they just wanted it there and then. They saw that he owned a reasonable house and even had a small investment property - so their view was that he could sell any of it to pay them the money NOW. There was no discussion, no negotiation, end of.

HMRC don't care about your personal circumstances - they are the most evil of Labour's horde.

Tazman, I dont expect HMRC to give a **** about people, but did it go to court? The courts are usually pretty reasonable and can put HMRC back in their box.....They are always knocking back debt chasers and setting what are generally reasonable repayment terms...If you ignore them and dont go to court of course they will by default get all sorts of orders with bailiffs et al...but if you defend yourself then they cant ride roughshod over you...
