    VAT Registration query from Hector

    I've read here that people have had their VAT registrations held up by questions from HMRC. I applied some 5 weeks ago and have received a set of questions today. I've submitted them to my accountant for comment, but I thought I'd post them here in case they were of use to anyone.

    I'm kind of hoping they are a standard set - I'd welcome any suggestions on how best to answer - of course I have nothing to hide , but I don't want to draw unwarranted attention

    Please supply additional information about your main business activity and describe the nature of the supplies you are making, or intend to make, to your customers.
    • Please clarify whether you provide any hardware or software as part of your supply.
    • Please clarify whether you supply computer components .
    • Do you sell to the public and/or to businesses?
    • Do you supply wholesale quantities of any goods?
    • Please confirm your business address as the address you have given appears to be residential. If this is the case can you describe how you operate this business from a residential address.

    We need further evidence from an independent third party to confirm that it is your intention to trade.

    Please provide documentary evidence of the taxable supplies you are making, or intend to make. Please provide a copy of your business plan, outlining the business and its aspirations, copies of contracts for purchase and sales from major suppliers and customers, copies of purchase and sales invoices. Please list your main customers and suppliers, with Vat numbers if applicable. Please supply copies of advertising materials, e.g, yellow pages, leaflets, local adverts. Please provide copies of e-mails or official business letter headed written correspondence with potential customers and suppliers.

    The documents you supply should support your requested date of registration.
    In particular I'm interested in what might supplied in related to the last request.
    Regards, J.

    seems 'fairly' standard.

    We had something similar, however it was 18 months ago so can't be sure it was the same.

    We just sent a photocopy of our first (4 month) contract and everything was fine.

      I'm guessing that they are making sure that you are not going to be doing some carousel fraud.

        the questions I got this week (after registering back in august) were:

        * provide sales invoices
        * purchase invoices
        * provide bank statements showing transactions

        I just passed on to my accountant who should already have the information required to complete this request.

        Looking forward to invoicing for the VAT for the last 2 months!

          Yes, from memory looks like standard stuff.

                I received my VAT registration a couple of days back - total elapsed time was about 9 weeks. I got fed up and wrote (http://www.writetothem.com/) to my MP last week about the delay. I received the certificate the same day as MP wrote his reply - which was a letter to the chancellor! I have very powerful friends it appears...
