    Christmas/company event allowance

Am I right in assuming that you are entitled to £150/head allowance for company events ?

If so can you spread it out over the year and have a couple of "company events" ?

Say I was taking the missus out on a shopping weekend that coinsided with her birthday and a group of friends going for a meal.
Could I claim for the hotel ? Lunch for the 2 of us ? Parking ? Now would I be pushing it to pick up the tab for meal/drinks for the friends ?

Obviously I don't want to exceed the £300 allowance so all tips welcome

The allowance can only be spent on Employees of the company, so no you can't use it to treat your friends .

Each employee is entitled to it, and they can bring a guest.

So, if your partner is an employee (as mine is), she can take someone, I can take someone, and we can claim £150 per person, if it comes to that.

Bear in mind - if you spend more than the allowance, e.g. spend £151, then the whole lot becomes a taxable BIK, not just the amount over the allowance.

What is classed as an employee ? Would company sec. count ? Or do they need to be paid ?

They would need to have a contract of employment and be receiving at least minimum wage, as well as all other employment rights. A company secretary is not automatically an employee.

I have been told by an accountant that it is per employee only.
I.e. if you have 2 employees and they both bring a guest then the total allowable is £300.

Well, it's early to be covering this (it's usually an early December topic), but it's £150 per head. Each employee can bring one guest.

An employee needs to be salaried, so unless you pay your company secretary as an employee, then they don't count.

Here's a link to last the discussion we had last year about it.
