Well I'd say you need to change accountants then. You pay them for a professional service and if you aren't getting responses on simple questions like this how can you trust them with the serious stuff?

Remember if you post here you are asking other contractors about accountanting issues. We know what we've learned, which to be fair is a lot in some cases, but it's still a bunch of contractors, not accountants. We are also a bunch of complete strangers and you can't quantify our answers. The fact this one is so simple means you can see the answer is pretty clear but in more complicated grey area's you aren't going to get any answers clear cut answer you can trust. If it's a complex question and you get the likes of Simes, PC and others chiming in then you are screwed.

To be fair it was a tongue in cheek reply as it winds the locals up something shocking as you can see but there is a serious element to it. You pay an accountant for specialist advice. They can guide you through the process and cover aspects you haven't thought to ask. If you'd asked them this I'd expect them to have quantified why which would have given you a solution to an area of tax. Can I expense a chair answers a simple question but leaves many other unanswered because you haven't be given an overview of the area.. if that makes sense.

Advising you to ask a qualified professional rather than a bunch of your anonymous peers is always the best advice regardless of how much it upsets the locals IMO



I didn't go down the trying a search method but as you've something to say on my reponse here we go.

There are plenty of other accounting questions we can discuss and muse to keep the forums going. We don't need every simple question to be asked here to keep it busy. You could even go as far as to say that the forum may not want traffic if it's simle questions that have been asked many many times before.

So there you go. Didn't really want to bring that aspect of it up but hope it helps you in some way. Very powerful stuff the google search when looking for anwers on here.

And some input in to the actual discussion I've got two Aerons and wouldn't swap them for the world. They are not expensive if they help aleviate backpain and don't ruin your posture for the rest of your live.

Yes, some fair points there. I use a local one man band outfit and he's clearly always dealing with other customers. Should probably look at using one of the outfits more geared to contractors like NW or SJD I guess.

Of course it's expensable.

If the LtdCo is still open for business, and marketing, and looking for business, one can off set. One is not dictated by the one sole contract, or lack thereof.

You most certainly should not. A search of the forum for their names will reveal why and we do have a very long thread on chosing accountants. It's sticked at the top of this thread. Get rid of the one man band. No good for us IMO. I had one and it was a nightmare, went to SJD which was a nightmare and have now picked a popular FA one, of which there are many. As I say, sticky threads and seach is your friend.

The chair, for example, would be a general business expense and not tied to one specific contract. Much like one's accountant's fees. Expenses like this can still be claimed via the company if it is still in operation. Inside IR35 contracts are, and should be, treated as completely separate of the company.

I've been hovering over the checkout button on a Titan for a few weeks now. How are you finding is for comfort, back support etc? There don't seem to be too many middling reviews. Reading the reviews, lots of people seem to love them but a fair few have had serious issues with the comfort and quality of the chairs they have received, accompanied with dire customer service.

I have that one which is a couple of hundred cheaper than the Aeron and has done sterling service for around 7 years.
