Client stating I can't work for another consultant, saying conflict of interest?

Started work with another client, informed current client my new working days to juggle both clients, (4days with current, 1 day with new client, contracted hours satisfied with current). Current client now saying due to conflict of interest, possible competitors - I cannot work for the other client.

Small industry so any similar consultant could be classed as competitor.
Husband works for new client, obviously chosen due to ease of gaining contract, conflict of interest could already exist!
I'm not involved in business / gaining work / finance etc. Just purely a resource working on non sensitive information so unsure where conflict lies.
Multiple clients of benefit to support Ir35 outside status (although I understand it is viewed on a per contract status)
Multiple clients also great as improves my professional knowledge / experience

Any experience of this?

Basically, all I want to do is work for my current client, supporting my husbands company, new client, now and again when needed, grrrrrr

It all comes down to what does the contract say? But effectively if the client objects, no matter how stupid they are, you've no recourse.

I've worked successfully for multiple clients - it's not that common. If I'm working part time for a client, I've always told them that the consequence is that I'll work for others to make my hours full time. If they want me exclusively, they'll have to pay for it.

You've two options.

1. Tell them to suck it up or sack you
2. You suck it up

I'd go for option 1, especially if I didn't need the money. But I'd make sure they stuck to the terms of the contract.

Talk to a lawyer. They’ll be able to review the detail.

In general all they can do is either sue you for losses. Which doesn’t seem relevant. Or take you to court and get a judge to put a restriction on you. If they do the latter it’s likely no longer than 6 months.
