Register as self employed as second job under Tier 2?

    Hello All,

Under Tier 2 General visa, I can work for 20 hours in a second job at the same professional level as my main job and outside my normal working hours.

I am thinking of registering myself as Self employed (sole trader) and work for 20 hours for self. My current employer is okay with this provided this doesn't hamper my current role.

I have looked up internet, public forums, gov.uk but still its not clear whether I am allowed to be self employed as second job in Tier 2

Any idea if this sounds possible ?

Well you are going to struggle sole trading. Agents won't touch and sole trader for our typenof contracts.

Thanks northernladuk. You are right that I would have to strive hard to get contracts, for now I wanted to know if its legal to register as self employed (working for 20 hours a week) given the my current circumstances?

You can't be a sole trader on a T2, nor can you cannot start a business of any sort, has to be employment only.

          Thanks stek.
Just read this article which increases my confusion,
Contractors' Questions: Can I go IT contracting on a Tier 2 general visa? :: Contractor UK
It seems to be from a reputed source and they say self-employed contracting is allowed when done at the same professional level.
          Am I missing/misreading something here?

Yes it's illegal and UKVI is jumping on these places now. Basically on a T2 you cannot work via an intermediary, has to be for the end client under his direction and control. Pop over to immigrationboards.com - it's all there. It's 100% not allowed.

T1G was fine for contracting, now that's suspended indefinitely, there is no way of working in UK as a contractor or freelance unless on the YMS visa, which is two years and does not lead to ILR other than via the 10 year route, or T1E for which you need £200k and the creation of six British jobs for your enterprise.
