    Tax return and expenses

    Hi
    can anyone help please?
I am contracting through an umbrella company and have submitted mileage claims.
Do I need to declare these as expenses on my tax return?

Ask your umbrella. They are your employers.

If within the ‘approved amount’, no.

Jeez. Since when was an employer responsible for it's employees' personal tax affairs?

        To the OP, it depends:

The most likely scenario is the umbrella paid you all claimed expenses and has NOT issued you with a P11D because they have dispensation from HMRC. In this situation there are no expenses to enter on your SAR.

If there are further expenses which you were entitled to and which the umbrella did not pay, then you can claim tax relief on these (note: not the full expense) via the SAR. If the umbrella issued you a P11D (unlikely) then these figures need to be copied to the SAR in two places.

Many people use umbrellas precisely so they don't have to bother with doing a tax return at all.

Thanks for your replies. I had contacted my Umbrella Company but thought I would get a quicker reply here (especially as I am no longer with them).
Northernladuk your reply was most helpful. They do have a dispensation so I won't enter any expenses on the return form. Unfortunately I have to complete one as I am a director of another company!

If that was the only contract you did with them you can't claim any expenses.

If your payslips show that your expense claims have been processed in full then you will not need to enter them on your tax return (as you would effectively be claiming tax relief twice and that would not make you popular with HMRC). As Stek says, if you only intended to work on one assignment whilst in the employment of your umbrella company, then you will have no entitlement to travel and subsistence expenses as your workplace would be considered permanent.

They are not responsible but they are well clued up on what they do for you and how it affects your personal status, particularly with Umbrella's so will be in very good position to give the right advice. Much better than a forum of random strangers that don't know the details of the situation.
