In the news this week is T Healey v HMRC, where an actor working away from home was denied tax relief for renting a flat. This was because he admitted he wanted a spare room for guests and thus the tribunals supported HMRCs view that the expense was no longer "wholly and exclusively" for business.
If you are deciding between hotel / B&B on one part or renting somewhere on the other part, then it doesn't mean you can't rent a flat, but be careful what you say.
I suspect had Mr Healey said "I need a spare room to store all my costumes in daahhlling, and I never have friends to stay, but if one slept over after a gin soaked luvvies night it would be on the sofa" he would have been OK.
