But I think we have to assume that these talks are going nowhere, and HMRC are just playing for time.
We don't want to look back in a few months and think, jesus, if only we'd acted sooner.Comment

HMRC should refund us the tax/nics we paid through self-assessment and raise a PAYE assessment against the agency instead. Unfortunately, for HMRC, they're out of time but that's their problem.Comment

Are we concerned about action HMRC can take that will close the door on this? Do we have any details (probably best via newsletter) or are we basing it upon how they tackled a losing situation in the past (i.e. S58)?
I am not advocating doing nothing but taking a measured approach covering all angles - something I am sure is happening behind the scenes.Comment

On the other hand, I would be so relieved to put an end to this I'm happy to let it go. Consider it my contribution to the economy (as an honest, responsible taxpayer).

FTT
Hi,
after all the Fraud scare I'm thinking of backing out of the review & ftt as robbers & crooks have
done nothing honest - misled parliament, lied in court etc, no end to their malice, and an endless pool
of career climbing apes that can be corrupted by them -offering sweet deals to judges.
Sorry for the negativity - all looking too scary for me now, since I want to continue being freelance, although
been out of work for nearly a year - can't really take the risk! And, after all didn't we follow QC advice
in the first place. Who would have thought the time machine existed, no-one can tell what low
levels the R&C will scoop too.Comment

Prior to S58, HMRC could have gone to court and lost, and OK it wouldn't have looked good that they let so many years and a few hundred £million slip through the net but not the end of the world.
However, they asked Parliament to pass retrospective legislation to tackle the scheme.
How would it look now if that legislation (a) didn't do the job, (b) wasn't even necessary and (c) they've still lost a few hundred £million?
What would you do in their position?Comment
