Ltd. Co. - Am I employed or self-employed?

Hi folks,
I get a bit confused when this comes up in the wonderful task of form-filling. Employment Status - Employed or Self-Employed? I'm the director of a Ltd. Co. but it's a classic one-man-band - so is it self employed or full time employment?

Well the answers given state that it depends on what question you're trying to answer, as in most cases there isn't one single correct way to do things.

A classic case of this is getting a car insurance quote on line. They ask your employment status typically, unemployed, retired, self employed, employed, company director. The correct answer for most contractors is both of the last two. But you only get one box to tick.

The answer to that question depends on who is asking and why, because there is no right answer

Strictly speaking, I think a director is not an employee unless there is a contract of employment. For tax purposes it makes no real difference as the end year forms and tax rules are the same for directors or employees over a given salary.

For other purposes I just put director.
