Help with setting up my profile on CUK - no access ?

After a month lurking I am ready to join in.
Registered a username and password, got confirmation email, used link to log confirm registration and login.
I want to set up my profile and avatar etc but when I try and access any settings it says I do not have permission.
What am I doing wrong / not doing : is there a time delay between registration and access ?
