Weird laptop problem

Just stuck an extra 2gb in my mother in law's laptop (actually stuck 2 new matching 2gb memory sticks in) and now it won't run on battery power, it reboots and gives bsod (win 7 64 bit). It's fine running on mains power though

So you'll need to find a compatible laptop with a friend etc.. and swap batteries and determine if its the laptop or the battery.

Why do people on forums continually post f****g stupid responses like that ?

The correct answer was in the post above yours. Did the battery lose condition (in some freaky way that causes BSOD), by coincidence, at the same time as the RAM was changed ?

Thanks for the replies. It's definitely the memory, if I take 2g out then it works ok on both battery and mains. 4gb, mains only. I was just asking to see if anyone could shed any light on WHY this might be happening.

I think I may know what it is
Is your laptop ddr2? The issue with ddr2 on some chips is that even though it should work with 1.8v it is not enough to correctly power it, this is even more true on higher performance/frequency ram, by forcing the ddr2 voltage to 2.0v should fix your issue, but I’m not sure your laptop will even come with that option in the bios, generally a desktop only option.

Which is why it's all good on cable but kaput when on battery as it tries to out voltage down to 1.8.
