What switch/cable can you recommend? (My current switch is a 10mb I think)

Those are routers, though I suppose you can use it as a switch.

If your current switch is 10Mb, then anything £1.50 and up will be a big improvement.

True but I wouldn't trust any corporate supplied router to actual route things properly or not have gaping large security holes.

The other reason I listed them is that I can't imagine anyone needs to ask what switch to buy. That sort of network infrastructure became a commodity purchase 15 years ago

If you're looking for a Wireless Access Point I'd recommend Apple Airport Extreme. It's rock solid.
(you didn't ask for one, but eek recommended two wireless routers which may have confused me!)

If you're looking for a switch, then any Gigabit switch. I have an HP ProCurve but blimey look at the price of this!

I think he needs the 8 port version which is £2 a port more.

But as the price shows switches are commodity products you don't really need recommendations for them. They work until the power supply dies and then you get another one.

Agreed, but you're talking about replacing the home hub with something better. I'm not sure what the situation is with being allowed to do that with BT, and on top of that, the suggestion tends to terrify non-techy users who only understand that they pay BT therefore need to use the BT box.
