What about the BIOS battery going dead? Have you tried whatever steps are required to boot straight in to the BIOS? Seems to vary between models, booting while holding certain keys etc?

    Something like this..

Shortened Startup without splash screen, mid-2011 or later for most models.
To help computers start faster, on some models the Compaq or HP splash screen is not displayed during the start up process. In this case, after pressing the power button, repeatedly press the Esc key to enter the Start Up Menu, and follow the prompt to press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.

I tried all of the above (except the reflowing).

The HP forums seem to indicate the MB is fried. I could waste hours looking at this but probably better to sell it for parts on ebay and ltdco buy a new one.

Thank you all for the suggestions
