    How will he hear you?

Surely, you just turn the volume up while on a (non-handsfree) call.

Yep, the volume controls are on the side. Try turning it up while on a non-handsfree call, you should see the volume indicator on the screen. If that's showing it's turned up and he still can't hear then there's a problem.

Maybe he has turned the ringer down instead of volume

Worth a try. Tell him to hold the lock button (on the top edge of the phone) and the home button (on the front of the phone) until the screen goes blank and the Apple logo appears. That does a hard reset of the phone.

Worth a try. Turning it off and on again just does an easy reset of the phone.
The other thing to try, if the only trouble is the volume when the holding the phone to his ear (instead of on speaker or headphones), would be to rotate the phone through 180 degrees and then see if it's any louder - if it works it should give better volume through the mic too.
