Ms doodab had a problem where the light sensor that detects it's being held up to your ear packed up so she could only use hers with headphones.

The other thing to try, if the only trouble is the volume when the holding the phone to his ear (instead of on speaker or headphones), would be to rotate the phone through 180 degrees and then see if it's any louder - if it works it should give better volume through the mic too.
