Hmm people did usd to have to write they're code manually before handing it to the lab boys to put through the computers. have you not thought about getting management to upgrade the system?

check out the column/block mode editing - stunning in its simplicity but soooo usable... maybe it is available elsewhere [apart from ms word + vim] but i haven't seen it.
