Antivirus software for the Mac

Can anyone recommend a good download for the Mac.

The wife just had a kernal panic and I've had to restore via startup disc. Now she wants me to put on an antivirus but I have no idea what is a good one or site to download from?

Any Mac users recommendations.

I run clamxav every other month just in case.

Usual opportunistic junk mail attachments but nothing else serious is detected.

Sophos has one as well.

But a kernel panic is more likely to be a hardware problem.

Was it running hot at the time? There are various utilities to monitor temperatures, and others to boost fan speeds. What model is it?

It's a Macbook Pro. Mrs MF said she thought it was getting hotter than usual.

It's just flickered, cut out and again kernal panic on start up.

Do you think the fan may need cleaning or something else? Not really a Mac person. Worth taking to the Apple Shop?

Thats a heat issue. How old is it?

Grab copy of a freebie tool called iStat. Shows you loads of performance info including heat and fan speeds.

Only about 3 or 4 years. It only started a couple of days ago. Surely cleaning the fan out should help shouldn't it?

Once it's kicked in, we need to reboot using the Mac OSX CD.

It should, unless the HD has issues. Taking it to a Mac store might well be a good idea.

Did you let it cool down before restarting it?

If you good at mucking around with hardware, you can find various repair guides at ifixit.com. Some of the repairs there are pretty difficult though, so an Apple Store is a safer bet.

I'm more than happy to take it apart, but when the reaction of 'WTF! WTF! Have you done! What did you do! What the fook!' + another five minutes of insults then a 30 minute strop after it crashed when I pressed the 'space key' to bring it out of sleep mode makes me think 'Send it to the Apple Store and pay the cost' versus the hassle I'll get if anything goes wrong.

(She's still not forgiven me for letting our 18 month old watch a video on it, to whit he proceeded to hinge off all the keys with a pen!)
