A security expert I used to come across on a regular basis was always warning of the potential pitfalls of JavaScript, so I developed the habit of running with it switched off for general surfing, and only switching it on for trusted sites (easy to do in Safari on OS X). Trusted sites I use regularly and which need Javascript to function got bookmarked in FF with NoScript.

This combination did me fine until I started needing Windows support last summer. I was overwhelmed by the number of otherwise reputable sites shoving intrusive ads at me. Back to the Firefox plus NoScript, plus this time AdBlock Plus. AdBlock Plus is neat because I can choose to add blacklists for the big German language advertisers as well.

Yes, I like that too. It's recently gone a bit crazy with the number of external websites some places reference, all containing their own lump of Javascript. NoScript allows you to see this.

From the comments in Block JavaScript in Google Chrome. NoScript’s features in Chrome!

Not quite the same Noscript isn't just filtering javascript, but also protection against XSS and ABE attacks and a few more … really hope that noscript's authors rethink they're decision to not publish on chrome!

It's not that he doesn't want to, but because the API needed to implement the plug-in is not there.
Um, well. Did folks really expect Google to produce something which allows you to disable ads easily?

There is an official AdBlock addon for Chrome and has been for a while. This is not the same as what I linked to, it blocks URLs rather than disabling JS, but it works just great.

Google probably figure the increase in users they'll get for this outweigh the minority who will turn it on - they'll get good PR from techy folk who evangelise browsers and their non-techy friends will use it.

Also, the fact it's at 500Mb doesn't mean automatically this is bad... it might simply be caching a load more stuff. It's only bad if it uses memory you need elsewhere... no doubt there are ways to configure it but I couldn't tell you how.
I always use process explorer - its a task manager killer!

to me disabling the ads is just reducing my chances of developing epilepsy, I never click on them, never, I may accidentally read the odd few but that is very rare - obviously a large majority of users do like web ads and respond to them but to me they just use real estate...

i want pages to load fast as poss- I'm only ever interested in its primary content and disabling adds speeds things up with no detriment to me

the controlling of scripts is more important to me

mmmm the adblock for chrome doesn't seem to block automatically, it asks you to scan for ads for each site you visit and then block - rubbish!

the javascript control seems to only allow all or nothing (only tried it on one site) but at least I can stop javascript from automatically running

Not for me it doesn't. Didn't you select a list to use? I find the recommended AdBlock & EasyList lists are very comprehensive.

You're talking nonsense. FireFox didn't write AdBlock, and Chrome has it too. Not to mention Mozilla make nearly all their profit from Google ads (maybe you thought they did it all for free).

Yuck. Not a lot of good for sites you just visit once.

That was there in the comments section of the article linked to earlier.

Just in, although it's a week old now:

RIM issues PSA following Pwn2Own exploit: turn off JavaScript on your BlackBerry

It's not just desktop web browsers getting hacked at this year's Pwn2Own challenge -- mobile browsers have also been targeted for vulnerabilities, and a fairly big one has now been found in RIM's browser for BlackBerry OS 6.

                    ...

For its part, RIM says that it hasn't actually seen any evidence of anyone exploiting the vulnerability, but it's nonetheless urging folks to disable JavaScript on affected devices, and it's now busy providing IT departments everywhere with guidelines on how to do so.

I will try it, with the firefox version just installed and it worked- no preconfiguring or anything, auto-blocked everything automatically

yeah grabbed it, seems ok but is Javascript on or Off - ultimately so much of Chrome is superior that I wouldn't go back but this functionality would make it complete!! (well almost - quite like separated search box and address bar to be honest)
