Steve Jobs has just finished his keynote launch of the iPhone 4 at the WWDC. Key points:
Puffery here, tech specs here.
- A4 processor + bigger battery means improved battery life:
- 7 hours talk time
- 6 hours 3G browsing
- 10 hours WiFi browsing
- 40 hours music
- 10 hours video
- 300 hours standby
- 960*480 display, 326ppi, IPS LCD, 800:1 contrast ratio
- 9.3mm thick (24% less than iPhone 3GS)
- Improved antenna system
- Back camera: 5Mpx, LED flash, "backside illuminating sensor" (?!) gives much better results in low light
- Front camera
- 720p HD video recording at 30fps
- WiFi upgraded to 802.11n
- HSPA+ (7.2Mbps down, 4.8Mbps up)
- FaceTime video calling: currently WiFi only (Apple are "working with" mobile operators to get it working over their networks), using either front camera (so they can see you) or back camera (so you can show them what you're seeing while still seeing them). This is going to be released as an open standard, so other smartphones will presumably join in the fun and it'll stop being an iPhone only thing
- Gyroscope: combined with existing accelerometer and compass, this gives 6-axis sensing
- Multitasking for apps
- About 100 other new features, supposedly
- Pricing looks like it'll just shadow existing iPhone 3GS pricing
- Available later this month
