Cancelling sky, broadband and phone line due to smart phone

Now that I've got a smart phone I've realised the only reason I need internet connection in the house is to play xbox games online.

This is rather expensive. I'm stuck with a £22.50/month BT unlimited internet broadband connection for another 9 months, £11.50/month line rental and £5/month xbox live subscription. That's a lot of money just to play modern warfare 2.

Also I'm miffed at how crap sky tv is, I only end up watching some football matches maybe 2 per month on skysports and the darts... my sky package costs me £45/month which goes up to £60/month next month if I don't cancel the movies (which are rubbish). HD is ok but worth £10/month? I doubt it. Gives me a headache for the footie. Can just go down the pub for footie. And I can watch tv on youtube or on dodgy websites.

So I'm paying short of £100/month for unecessary entertainment at the moment. Madness. That's a lot of beer.

Smart phone means I don't need net in the house to access email, youtube, games etc.

Assuming you're asking for advice rather than just having a whinge. How about getting a 3G network dongle for your desktop/laptop and using it as a router?

No need for any fixed line then.

Latency's too slow for online gaming though.

So you have an expensive BB connection and a near full whack Sky HD package and you wonder why you pay £100 a month?

Xbox live is £32pa at the moment if you let it expire and rejoin, that's what my dashboard says since I let it go.

You can get a basic Sky+ package for £18 and Sky BB for a £5.

I make that £26 a month, have you thought about just downgrading?

You do need a fixed line BB package for online gaming.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Personaly I think I earn decent money and so does the girly so I don't want to live like a monk from the dark ages.

My broadband is 5 quid a month and I am seriously thinking of pushing it down to the free option on orange which is certainly good enough for xbox live

I watch quite a lot of good TV so SKY HD is worth it, 55 quid for all the pakages and HD, I probably watch a minimum of 5 films a week.

Going to be dropping my sky when move house in a few month's, just not worth it. 24 news is available for free on digital and most TV series I watch I just download direct from the US (thus keeping me days if not weeks/months ahead of sky), UK ones i can get on digital.

Just not worth the cost for the amount of time I actually use it, and even when i do watch it always get annoyed with amount of ad's, regularly feel like i am paying to be sold to

Dropping broadband though? NEVER…I want more and faster

Until Lord Mandelson and his cronies come knocking and take away your internet access for illegal downloads.

We cut the Virgin TV and phone bill last year - scrapped the movies, scrapped the sports, cut back to the most basic TV (so the kids can watch CBeebies etc.), got rid of the extra box (although they never took it away, they just stopped charging for it), cut down to free evening calls instead of any time calls.

Which means that we now save so much each month, I can start to work on the Mrs about upgrading the broadband to 50Mbit.....

In other words you're going to save a small amount of money by resorting to crime. Have you considered applying the same to other aspects of your life? Not paying for petrol must save a bit? Load up your trolley in Tescos and do a runner through the tills? Steal your neighbour's jewelry and sell it down the pub? Loads of savings to be made if you think about it.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.
