My eldest has an Asus eee with ubuntu netbook version on it and it's wonderful to use. The GUI is actually configured for a little screen and it just does everything. Overall I am very happy and he can't break it.
The default version of Linux it shipped with was a bit pants and didn't last on it for very long.Comment

What is the objection for having a hard disk?Originally posted by Julius Caesar View PostI see that Asus has all but abandoned Linux, and Acer seems to have done so too.
Thing is, once you have Windows you need a hard disk, so it costs more even on top of the Windows licence, and it draws more power. So you don't really have a netbook any more.
So, is there a netbook still on the market that satisfies these?
small but big enough to use (1)
allows "real" surfing etc (2)
linux pre-installed
no hard disk (flash memory)
either many hours battery life, or voltage < 12v
reads USB memory
Wifi (with adapter would do)
low cost, pref < £200 (3)
(1) i.e. bigger than a phone or PDA. smaller than a 13" laptop, A5 would be my ideal.
(2) i.e. resolution good enough, and able to render all pages. My Palm for example is too small and its browser will just not show all pages."A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices," George OrwellComment

The only ones I know of that come with Ubuntu are Dell.

I know people who have them but I don't know which Dell model they have."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

I got Ubuntu for the netbook from here:

Slapped the disk in, answered 5 questions wandered away for 15 mins and then it was all done. Lovely and easy, much less hassle than the average windows install

I'm wondering if I should spend the same money on a refurbed IBM X60 or similar..not sure if the small keyboard/screen would piss me off after a whileComment
