Webserver getting hit - Should I be worried?

I'm pretty new to this lark, and my webserver currently only has myco website on it (it's used for some other stuff which isn't available to the outside world).

I was a little surprised to see 32000+ hits from a random server in france attempting to get lots of PHP & other docs from the site - which obviously don't exist.

Is this somebody trying to have a crack, failling, and therefore nothing to worry about, or should I report it to the ISP of the naughty IP?

Prob just a server somewhere has been hacked and an automated bot has picked your IP and is attempting known exploits to try and infect more machines. You can ignore or if you feel like doing a good deed for the day then contact the server hosts and let them know.

Ping flood their server, that should wake them up

Could be crawlers looking at your website for content!? lookup robots.txt and it will add some explanation. Add the file to your website to stop them

Add Google Analytics to your site, much more useful than the standard stats.

Is your site hosted on a shared server? Do you have shell access?

It was from a standard ISP somewhere in France - and was after all sorts of PHP files etc so I don't think it was a crawler.
