Laptop Problem...

Hi, wonder if any techies can help.

My laptop has a display problem, about a quarter of the left hand side of the screen is either blank [ black ] or has interferrance on it - I preumed it may be a loose connection?

Before I take the thing apart and stabbing it with a screw driver - can anybody advise me what I should be looking for or is it possible a component has gone [ is hte screen lit by a number of bulbs ] ??

Are you sure the driver has not just gone fubar?

Try booting from a Linux 'live' dvd/cd.
This should eliminate the driver question.
If it's still broke then it's a hardware prob.
Dead flexible pcb or zebra connector?

Edit: Obviously don't select the 'Install' option.......

plug it into a monitor to see if you get same problem, if so then it's
a software / driver issue, otherwise get the screwdriver ready.

Just boot into "safe Mode"...that skips most drivers and will use the proprietry Windoze one...

Thinking about it, if it's a hardware problem you should see the symptoms as it boots through the 'POST' screens (before operating system loads) .

Are there any big magnets or magnetic things near the side of the screen?

no it's not drivers, kids have used it so I'm thinking slamming the cover down has loosened / broken something - just don't know where to start.

Should I just take it into PC World and let them sort it out?
