    Dell warranty

Looking to buy a new laptop and now have my sights on a Dell - not convinced it's worth paying the significant extra for a Sony Vaio.

Anyway, is it worth upgrading the Dell warranty to 3yrs.

Or are they still as reliable as they used to be back in the day?

Personally, I would pay extra for a Sony. Dell are ok, but not great. Stopped using their laptop about 1.5 years ago.

Sony are OK until it comes to out of warranty support. Then you will find even the most basic parts are extortionate.

IMO Dell service is still very good.

My dell laptop needs to go back, I am just too busy to get the time.

Bright blotches on the screen and the video card keeps crashing.

        Swines.

Have a 3year old Dell laptop.....not had any issues with it.
It depends on what your requirement is. I only use it for email, browsing and basic MS Office stuff. For that, Dell is excellent value for money.

Get a 3yr onsite warranty from Dell.

Worth having and would still be cheaper than a Sony with 12 months RTB warranty.

My 2 Dells (laptop and desktop) are going strong, as is the old now 5-year old Dell laptop I have lying around. I haven't paid for the extra warranty on any of them.

Remember that if it fails within a "reasonable" time you have rights regardless of warranties. And the way I see it is if it's a build fault, you're likely to notice straight away. And if it works for the first 6 months, it's *probably* going to work for the first 3 years.

Having said that, you should go for the warranty. The reason I say that is it's obvious that's how they make their money (by exploiting the gullible), and how they can make their products so cheap for the rest of us.

True but Sony have a promotion on at the moment where they extend the warranty to 3yrs for free as long as you register your laptop within 30 days.

Offer expires at the end of March 2009.

I would most humbly advise that a 3y warrenty on a laptop is a necessity.
My HP laptop screen died after 1.5yrs and I didn't have an extended warrenty. I now have to pay £150+ to get it replaced.

I'll have to add in here that Tech support from Dell is worse than terrible in my opinion.
