The third party app business is going to make a good deal of difference to the iPhone IMO - those features that are lacking can be provided via that route for those who want them, but the base system doesn't have to be bloated with features.
For example I personally can't think of a use I might have for MMS. If I wanted to send somebody a photo I'd probably want to send it to several people anyway, and a CCed email makes more sense for me (given that most of my friends have old phones anyway).Comment
