Is this really the Technical area?

OK, I'm new to this site even though I'm not new to contracting.

First impression is that the category idea seems to have gone out the window. There seems to be lots of what I would regard as "General" stuff in the "Technical" category. I'm not going to pick out any specific thread as I think it's a widespread issue and I wouldn't want to offend any particular Thread Starter.

    Am I missing the point?

Yes this is it. Not the techie Nirvana you hoped it would be?

Not sure what's not 'technical' about the majority of the threads on p1? Or were you hoping to discuss compiler implementations or improvements to the 555 multivibrator?

Maca, why dont you help the forum out and throw in some technical discussion instead of a non technical rant about a technical forum
whats the lowest you can do this for?

iPhone unlocking and other stuff -- hardware
          Excel macro problem -- bugs
          BBC HD programmes? -- hardware
Ripping DVDs to mp4 / iPod friendly format -- software
          Hard disk failure -- hardware
Garmin or Tom Tom -- hardware
AD and CSVDE Imports -- software
          Creating PDF documents -- software

          What's the problem again?

This sounds like someone trying to up their post count.

              No, just testing the water.

Looks like it's as I suspected. I'd been reading through a sample of the posts, right back to the early one's on this site, and I started to get the impression that the "Contractor UK" site has degenerated. Disappointing as I initially thought that I'd stumbled on a useful place.

It's seems that all that's left are a group of self indulgent individuals who have found others who indulge them in return. A bit like a group of bullies in a park that sit on the swings, so no-one else can have a go, but refuse to use them.

nope not at all, it just seems that way at first..

you could always try it out and ask any technical question and see what useful replies you get..

                oh and welcome

Oh dear, it certainly isn't a good idea to start flaming that's for sure.

It's true that newcomers can get a bit of a hard time until they're recognisable as regulars but we've discussed all this before and it's because we need to weed out

                  a) the whingers
                  b) the I-can't-use-a-search-engine ers
                  c) the soft skinned

You don't sound like you're any of those so maybe we all just got off on the wrong foot. Try again and perhaps contribute something positive?

I did start a technical thread about GIT, arguably a new concept in CM.

I assumed that most IT Contractors would have an interest in this but it didn't really get much feedback, with the notable exception of a VectraMan.

Anyway, if I had a question about HD TV or an iPhone I suspect I'd find a specialist forum rather than asking a UK IT Contractor, with all due respect of course.
