How can I register an email address for myself with google & get a @gmail.com address rather than @googlemail.com

Starting October 19, 2005, the Gmail service will be renamed Google Mail in the UK. We will no longer issue new @gmail.com addresses.
Apparently they had a fight with another company over the Gmail name in the UK.
So I guess the the answer is "you can't" unless you live outside the UK..."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

You can't and it doesn't matter.
The domains gmail and googlemail both route to the same destination anyway.
So you can either mail to yourname@googlemail.com or yourname@gmail.com and it will arrive in the same inbox.

1) Go somewhere foreign and sign up
2) Get someone in another country to sign you up
3) Do it through a proxy server in another country

I've just opened a new gmail account this morning when registering at http://pages.google.com, but then I live in Ireland so they'll show my ip address as being outside of the UK.Comment
