Mobile phone or wireless to @#%$ a laptop to the net?

I have a motorola v500 mobile that has gprs and wap. I also have a laptop with a built in modem/rs232 port and wireless access slot. In Jan I'm off on a contract away from home for 6 months and want to get on the net on my laptop from the b&b.

Anyone know how much wireless access is and who the good suppliers are? Alternatively is there a way of using the gprs on my phone to get net access?

I've had a look on the orange site but they don't seem to flog the right gizmo for my phone, and the few wireless providers I've tracked down on google seem v v expensive!

I assume by wireless access you mean via wi-fi hot spots. You won't find this that gives coverage in your house (unless, like my colleague you are very lucky). You will have to go to the local railway station, Starbucks, whatever to use it. No idea who sells the best service or how much it costs.

OTOH if you are staying in a hotel then the service may be provided by the hotel and will either be available for free or for an extortionate hourly charge (I have never seen a hotel take the middle path!) You'll be unlikely to find this in an average price B&B.

Yes you can (in theory) use GPRS to access the web. If orange can't help you you might need to consider a change of provider.

WiFi hotspots would do the trick but obviously I'd have to be in one - and I don't fancy a big mac or overpriced coffee everynight for 30 mins of wifi access!

What I was thinking of was something like the Orange 3g datacard but my research tells me that they're a bit flakey right now: www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/show...eadid=8523

And Orange's website tells me that they're very fcuking expensive! www.orange.co.uk/business...ng_3g.html

I might be able to use my v500's gprs/bluetooth capability to connect my laptop to the net via a usb bluetooth device. "Luckily" I'll have plenty of time in the evenings in the hotel/b&b to get such a rickety connection sorted.

Or if I'm really lucky someone close to the b&b will have an unprotected wifi connection that I can piggyback on! Bit unethical though as well as being unlikely.

So, it was you that got the contract to test AtW's Killer Ape!!!

Seriously though, I have a Nokia 6600 and connect viat bluetooth to the 'phone using it as a GPRS Modem - Only pay for data transferred, not for time connected.

              Mobile gprs as laptop modem

Interesting. What's the procedure for that then? Do you connect to GPRS on the phone and set up an internet connection on the laptop? I've seen someone doing this but I can't find the settings or process to do it myself, and can't find them anywhere on the Orange website.

                3G access from your laptop

has the 3G situation improved in the last couple of years

e.g can you get 3G coverage just about everywhere except the middle of nowhere

what experiences have people had with it, what is currently best network in terms of price and coverage

                  Holy Necro-thread revival batman.

There is another thread on them but T-Mobile and Three both do good datacard / data on mobile packages
