Why ask a builder? They will probably outsource it to a window fitter. Get a quote from a local window fitter directly.

I just thought it would be simpler to get one outfit to do everything (replace windows, masonry painting).Originally posted by BlueSharp View PostWhy ask a builder? They will probably outsource it to a window fitter. Get a quote from a local window fitter directly.
From initial conversations I've had with a window firm and painter/decorators, it's going to be a heck of a lot cheaper going down this route than the quote I had from the small local builder. I'll report back how much cheaper when I get firm quotes.Comment

You don't suppose the local guy would have to sub out the specialised stuff to the same people, meaning you're paying for them plus his margin plus his profits on top...Originally posted by woody1 View Post

I don't think so. He's a general builder and AFAIK the only stuff he doesn't do himself is electrics/plumbing/heating. I know he installed a couple of windows, and did masonry painting, for one of our neighbours who recommended him.Originally posted by malvolio View Post

Maybe he doesn't fancy the job. I've heard that tradespeople sometimes over-quote for jobs they're not keen on, making it a bit of win-win whether they get the work (ker-ching!) or not.Last edited by woody1; 6 November 2025, 20:18.Comment

Yeah that does happen on small jobs sometimes. I remember trying to get a repair on a double glazed window took months of chasing and nagging because it was just a half hour job that several people just thought wasn't worth their time. Yet they all advertised that they did repairs of any size! There's times when I'm glad that renting means such time wasting nonsense is my landlady's job now.
Also, when did you want the work done? Coming up to a not nice time of year, weather-wise, for being up on a roof if you don't have to be.Comment

Spring/summer. Where we live you wouldn't want windows replacing at this time of year.Originally posted by ladymuck View PostAlso, when did you want the work done? Coming up to a not nice time of year, weather-wise, for being up on a roof if you don't have to be.Comment

Got some quotes. All inc VAT.
Two for replacement windows; £1500 and £1700. They can replace them from the inside, so don't need scaffolding.
Masonry painting dormer facias, 2 days £400, but it will need scaffolding.
Scaffolding to provide boarded platform just below windows, £960. Includes 4 weeks hire. £60 per extra week.
Total approx £3,000. Compared to builder's quote of £8,400.Comment
