Change BIOS settings from within DOS or Windows

I doubt it. Usually it's got to be done before the OS loads by hitting the appropriate key (F1 or Del or whatever).

Threaded would go back in time to just before the release of the first BIOS and ensure that the change he wanted to make was the default option. He would then disappear up his own arse in a temporal paradox.

You can do it for the BIOS on video cards, ATI and NVidia both have utilities to do it but changing the motherboard BIOS has to be done at startup.

IBM laptop used to have a window app that would change the bios from within windows (well some paramters anyway)


what are you trying to change - and which BIOS is it (firmware)?

The reason I ask is there is a PC that I have remote access (MS Remote Desktop) to and I would like to change the BIOS so that on power-up, the PC automatically starts.

At the moment, if there is a brief (or long) power outage, the PC needs someone to go there and hit the power button to boot it up again.

There is a BIOS setting on the PC for this, and if I could run a utility remotely to change the BIOS setting, it would save me a lot of bother.

I have never come across any software that allowed BIOS changes to be made from an OS. The DOS utils I have in my ancient collection were only for flashing / upgrading the BIOS which was kinda risky as the process could leave you with a dead m'board if it failed.

I did have a util called vampire which could read the BIOS info to a file which could then be edited in hex and flashed back to the BIOS or blown to a prom.

Those were the days.
