No sound on PC

Was working OK last time I played a CD, honest

Have been through troubleshooter, but everything is (allegedly) OK

What to do now? Running on XP 2002 SP2

Check the volume levels in windows are turned up
Check the speakers are plugged in
Check the volume on speakers is turned up
Check you haven't muted it
Have you made any driver changes?
Have you disabled sound in BIOS if on-board card
Swap out sound card and try a new one

TBH the list could be endless....

what happens if you try and open the volume control?

On 2 different PC's this year i've had similar and very bizarre sound problems

I've worked my way right through the (tedious) troubleshooters, nothing has been flagged as a problem or probable cause.

I'm going to re-install the driver (hasn't been changed though) with a later version, going on advice from the PC manufacturer's site

The problem is, what to do if this doesn't work?

Do you have automatic updates from MS? I did an update the other day that installed a new driver for the sound on my motherboard that didn't work. I had to roll back and it worked OK.

I had a similar problem the other day.

Sound working fine one day, sound not working fine the next. Nothing, to my knowledge, had changed.

Then I discovered the problem. Something fell off a shelf, next to my PC and hit the keyboard (before bouncing off on to the floor).

The key the item landed on...was the Windows Media Player Mute Key.

Yes, this is totally seperate and independent from the Windows Volume Mute.

The really annoying thing was, the volume icon in system tray was not affected, as that was one of the things I checked. It took 2 hours, driver updates, and crikey knows what else, till I opened up WMP again and had a fiddle around. (I don't know WMP to be honest, I just click an mp3, it opens, it plays, job done. I don't use any other features of WMP)

Working again! Appears to have been a problem with the settings on the monitor (which houses the speakers)

It has taken you three weeks to work out that the monitor volume had been turned down o_O

No I'm not in support. I may move to investigations to find out who was responsible for changing the settings in the first place....
