Google "My IP Address" to see your internet facing IP address: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=my+ip+address
Then you could use a service like ip2location to check what geo location is associated with it e.g. Free Product Demo | IP2Location
There might be other ways advertisers could use if they aren't already - e.g. photos, social media posts etc. can all be tagged with geo locations picked up from your device' location tracking capability such as GPSComment

Ya, it would never be 100% accurate - An IP address as such has no connection to geo-location. When ISPs get a block of IP addresses, they might assign some locations to them for convenience / administrative reasons.Originally posted by VectraMan View PostApparently I'm in Lewes. Things might change with IPv6 when each flower-pot in your house might have its own geolocation tagged IP addressComment

as mentioned already there are many variables to this, social media and check ins to googling for a painter in your postcode. Some come from info youve given like say independent forum you signed upto and put your town in profile togeolocating Ips etc.Originally posted by xoggoth View PostYou know those ads on online news pages like "XXX left stunned by this new laser eye surgery" where XXX is your approximate location that is easily obtained from the IP address?
One on The Independent today has XXX as my small village. Where did they get that from? I have not signed up for The Independent or any such ads and Bing Maps centres on the usual large town about ten miles away.
Odd. Any Ideas? Cheas.
Best way even if general surfing at home is to use incognito browsing at a bare minimum but as a default use a VPN, not necessarily paid, you can get browser addons and that, used to recommend Hola until the botnet revelation, so not them but many others outthere.
Started doing that myself after I got the fright of my life in work, singed into google chrome with personal address both on home laptop but also work one as have some favourite links that are useful for work that i use heaps. Thing is was at home one night and searching lingerie sites to by the missus a couple of bra and knicker sets, bought said items and happy. In work next day googled a techy issue with a couple of juniors around me and voila every site i went to birds in bras and knickers.Comment
