DTEXEC (SSIS) - minimum install & license cost

If I wanted to run an SSIS package on a Windows Server 2012, what's the minimum install I can get away with and what are the cost implications?

It's a bare bones production server, no SQL Server installation present. The SSIS package will communicate with SQL Azure.

Has anyone here been faced with a similar situation?

I remember having a similar discussion years back about SSRS and the conclusion was they are features or components of SQL so you need a full SQL license on every server you put it on. I assume that would the case for SSIS, but then again MS licensing changes by the hour.

Yep, it's a full SQL Server license. Your best bet in that scenario is a server plus cal model. Core licensing would be crazy. You may be able to get away with standard edition if you don't use any enterprise components in your ssis package.
Have you tried switching it off and back on again??

It would be nice if SSIS could be run in Azure wouldn't it?

How big is your database going to be? What version of SQL Server do you need as a minimum? How long will the database be up/used for?
If its small (<= 15gb), you dont need SQL server 2014/2016 or it wont be up for too long, you could get away with an installation of SQL Server express (free) which comes with BIDS therefore provides all you need.

I didn't think Sql Server Express could run an SSIS package? I'm sure you can create SSIS packages with BIDS, but you can't run them using SS Express?

You will need a full licence for SSIS (it doesn't come in SQL Express and you can't use a Developer licence for Production work).

The other question would be could you use a hosted sql server virtual machine either in Azure or AWS which would be billed just for the hours its switched on...
