Password management

Have been using password management apps for some time now. Started with Keepass, then moved to Lastpass. Moved from lastpass a while back as I didn't feel happy having it all in their cloud (think they got hacked again ~2015).

Currently using 1password, which I like. But think my setup is not exactly optimal ! To keep the password db synced between two Macs, I used a secure file sharing (think dropbox, but storing data encrypted, etc.). And the master password for that sync app is in my password db ... which is located in the sync folder !

I would have to lose both Macs (and my phone) to then have to retrieve data from the cloud .. which could be an issue. Although I've probably got an offline backup of it somewhere (will have to look for that).

Anyway ... 1password have just announced their online password vault, to accompany their standalone app. Am thinking of heading back to storing stuff in their cloud offering for simplicity.

Are you talking about your personal data?

Write your passwords down at home with a key of what each password is.

Then keep a separate piece of paper somewhere else in the house that converts the key to what the password is actually for.

Burglars won't care about your scraps of paper kept in separate rooms from your PC - they're after your PC.

If you want an offsite backup, take a photo of each and store them somewhere else.

I'm too far down the digital storing of passwords now, and associated information (such as account logins / security questions, etc) to go back to paper.

I'm just trying to decide whether to stick with using a standalone app where the data is local, and ensuring that a backup of it is accessible. Or, go back to storing it in an online app...

I use Roboform which allows syncing to multiple devices. Been very happy with it for years.

Is that better than having an encrypted USB flash drive containing a password text file, that is stored in a fire/flood proof safe?

Then you just need to remember the pin to access the flash drive whenever you need a non-remembered password.

Keep it simple, and offline.

I just mash the keyboard for every new password and then ask for a password reminder/reset next time I need it. No need to remember them at all then.
