Didn't expect so many rapid replies !!

Maybe encryption is the way to go. Plugging external devices in is officially a bit of a no-no and seems a bit conspicous to others.

Still no-one knows a quick, no frills kill XP command ?

    Can somebody please try C:\Windows\system32
\osuninst.exe and post the outcome when you get to another computer tommorrow ?

Not even remotely close to my name.

Unprofessional ? I'd say the I'm the opposite but I'm not going to expand on that here. If I told you the goings on at this very high profile place it wouldn't be the sole contractor you'd be blaming. Almost to a man the permies seem the think the organisation exists to serve their personal needs.

I've been at this place for 3 years and as I've become bored, out-grown it, saved some $$ .... I've started very openly and clearly telling the client's management what's wrong, what needs to change and how they can do it. Some of the middle/higher seem to appreciate that very much as most perms are too scared to say it/don't think of it/ or don't give a sh!t. But the vindictive muppet directly above me hates it. I think he'd like to bring in a much more pliable, inexperienced BOS that he can fully control. Yes sir, nor sir, 3 bags full...

Personal data ? Well I have to accept the point to some extent. But I defy you to use the same windows desktop for 3 years and not leave any personal data.

Osuninst.exe will only work if you've previously done an Upgrade install. If it's a clean install of XP (or taken from an image) it won't work.
How tech savvy (or lazy) are your IT bods ?
Deleting the likes of boot.ini will obviously stop the machine from booting but it can be easily overcome if they wish to make the effort. Normally they just reimage the box as it's faster and easier than troubleshooting the 'problem'.

Forgot to ask...you said machines. How many ??

          you're right.
I use 4 PCs (and they host VMs) but mainly just 2.

I will clean up as much as poss on my own before hand. But the question had me intrigued as a challenge as much as for my own little case.

Hey. Why don't you f-ck the servers as well? That'll serve them, wont it.

I like the idea of grinding the drives to powder. I think my soon to me ex-colleagues would have difficulty doing much with a pile of dust. Then again one was surprised to find out that it was possible to have 2 hard drives in a PC. Only 12 years experience in IT ............

Promotion to VP must be coming.

What is the cut-off time when a contractor becomes perm in your eyes ?

Haven't you ever worked on a major project or you just never justifed an extension? If you prefer to bounce between small-time bits of odd-job coding on the periphery of the real action then please yourself but don't be bitter.

Its not about doing anything nasty, just closing any potentially embarrassing doors.
And as I mentioned above: now I'm just curious if/how it could be done in an instant.

I suspect WMI could take care of business.
