Magnetic resistance cross trainer - how do they work?

Finally given up repairing my ancient belt drive cross trainer and got a new Reebok cross trainer. Resistance is all controlled via the console as with a proper gym one.

I always assumed the ones at the gym had mains power but mine has a little PSU like a mobile phone. How on earth does that manage to provide significant resistance? Can't seem to find any explanation online.

Not important question I know, just curious. Cheers for any ideas.

The resistance is varied by moving the metal disk closer or further away from the magnets. So the low power electronics only has to move the disk.
