Fibre at home - Sky do but now BT won't?

A year or so ago I ordered fibre through BT. Then I realised Sky would do it for a lot cheaper so I asked BT to price match they didn't so I cancelled.

Been with Sky over a year now. All good but fancy moving to BT now to get BT Sport (and of course, its cheaper than Sky now with introductory offers etc).

BT are now telling me that fibre is not available in my area yet? WTF?

Is it even possible that one provider (i.e. Sky) can provide Fibre but another (BT) can't from the same cabinet?

Is it even possible that the could provide fibre in the past but not now? Capacity I was thinking?

Or more likely - BT are completely useless?

BT and Sky share the cable infrastructure and street cabinets but not the Exchange equipment. This means that it is possible for BT to have run out of connections in the exchange but not Sky. As BT are the more well know provider of fibre it is likely that their connections will run out first. Once they have enough new demand BT will add more equipment to the exchange (if there is room available).

Probably explains it then. Perhaps a better explanation would help from BT then - i.e. we dont have capacity at the moment not the bollax I got that fibre was not YET available in my area. Tossers.

Did you try to order BT by speaking to someone or by using their website?

A few years ago when fibre came to our village, I ordered it through the website and got it. A neighbour phoned and was told it was not available.
I told her to order it through the website, but she kept on phoning.

Sometimes the website will offer you something that the phone won't.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Is this fibre to the home \ premises (FTTH) or fibre to the cabinet (FTTC)?

I really cant see sky being able to provide either ahead of BT unless BT were being arses (possible) about not ordering before they say so.

I ordered FTTC when BT said my cabinet was enable but then BT said they weren't accepting orders 'just yet.' Sky wouldnt entertain orders because they said BT hadnt enabled the cabinet.

Id love to have FTTH but BT's near 2 grand quote to run a cable from the cabinet 600 metres away to the house was far too expensive. if they want to drive proper take up of their TV service and bundles, they are going to have to deliver a lot faster speed than the 80meg under Infinity 2 delivers.
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

Why? 80Mb is already ten times more than is necessary for HDTV. Making it a hundred times more than is necessary isn't going to drive take up of anything.

G.Fast may be the next big thing promising up to 500Mb over the same FTTC system we have now. They're also talking about bringing fibre closer to houses and installing some equipment under the street serving several houses, though one of the issues is power. Seeing as digging up everybody's garden would cost an absolute fortune it seems to me money is much better spent finding better ways to use the existing copper cables.

The future's bright. Except in Wales. Probably.

I live in rural Devon and round here they're running fibre along the telegraph poles. I guess the cabinet covers such a large geographical area that copper loses too much speed over the large distances to properties. I may be getting my hopes up but, from the equipment installed on the poles, it looks like we're all getting FTTP.

FTTC. 40mb is fine for me after 1mb broadband.

Like I said a year ago BT were ready to do it, but I decided on sky. Now BT are saying not available. Computer says no!
