Quite a nostalgia trip via MAME and WorldOfSpectrum.org

Still got my speccy but no cassette player to load the games with.

A journey through the gaming machines I owned to jog a few memories....
Atari 2600
ZX Spectrum 48k
SNES (skipped the Amiga/ST stage)
Nintendo 64
Playstation 1-4

Just use an XBOX controller on a PC, and MAME and you're good to go

I still play Lords of Midnight and Doomdarks Revenge on the speccy every now and then, it just seems to satisfying when you finally win

Not to mention things like Aviator and Revs.

I remember a few years after Revs came out I was in a meeting in a hotel in London with the top man from Loriciels, the French games publisher. He was showing us an in-development version of a new racing game, boasting about how much better it was than the competition and so forth.

I casually asked "So can you turn around and go round the track the other way, like in Revs?" He was silent for about three seconds. Then he said "No, but you will be able to."

I often wonder how much grief the developers had off him when he got back to France and they tried to explain to him that this was an arcade-style racing game, not an accurate driving simulator, and no it wasn't possible to add that

The Tatung Einstein had a thing called the "Speculator" (or some such) that allowed one to play certain Spectrum games thereupon.

'Twas of zero interest to me, so I bought an 80 column card instead.

I had a Tatung Einstein (as well as Amiga and all manner of weird and wonderful less well known earlier machines, such as Enterprise!).....

The Tatung was unusual. Never saw one but remember reading about the Tatung "pipe". I had a Dragon 32 followed by an Amstrad CPC464. The Enterprise was a lust object due to its ridiculously powerful graphics and screen resolution (512 x something). At least according to the adverts, but there were manufacturing problems, seemingly.

On running up a CPC464 emulator, (or Dragon), it is amazing how you can remember many commands without checking the manual.

Especially given I destroyed the keyboard membrane with Daley Thompson's Decathlon, Supertest and Hypersports

Ended up having it replaced with a Spectrum+ cover as part of the repair.

IIRC even hard wearing arcade machines had their joy sticks worn out with that game.
