It however ignores the reason why Windows 10 is free and going to force updates on you and that's because its far cheaper to support 1 consistent, continually up to date system rather than 10 variations.... It may well be that Microsoft see that its cheaper to allow current users to have everything free knowing that they will still get £50 every few years when people purchase the next laptop / desktop...

The details provided, true or not, are more detail than the OP.

My feeling is that the answer is simply that it is too good to be true. It is free to put Windows 10 on the machine, but if you're not paying for the product, then you are the product. I.e. they'll make their money another way, which they have not detailed yet.
Don't believe it, until you see it!

I think in this case you are the product when you buy a new computer or use it at work. This is a cost limitation game, move as many people from Windows 7 (which is rapidly becoming insecure) and Windows 8 (which many detest) to Windows 10 and save on support costs.

One thing that did stand out in the various pages of the Forbes website article, was the mention of transitioning from Windows 10 onto Windows (the future product).
It's possible that Windows 10 is free because it won't last long before you're automatically transitioned onto some sort of version of Windows, which is subscription based.
Make everyone jump to the free product which has a short lifespan, then they are herded onto the future platform.

            paranoia is a wonderful thing

Microsoft are moving people from 7 because they need to reduce support costs. The continual upgrades is part of managing those support costs.

As soon as Microsoft start charging the thing they are trying to fix (insecure systems that can't be easily supported) will occur again.... Yes Microsoft could start a compulsory subscription service for Windows, Google would rub its hands with glee....

Surely those support costs would have already been factored in when they created the thing. They are also responsible for setting the supported timespan of the O/S. There's nothing new that they couldn't have calculated. If anything, releasing a free product means they will need to put more effort in, as nobody would be expected to upgrade to Windows 10 if it was rubbish, no matter how free it is. There's a long term money making plan in there somewhere. If not subscription based, then content based or even pure data harvesting.
Google would be the reason why Microsoft Windows would go content driven.
The closer to the user you are, the more you can funnel them onto your content network. Google tried "in your face" with Google Glass.

I stopped using Windows years ago, OSX is far superior, no doubt this will be another nail in the coffin for MS.

Microsoft tried something brave and clearly completely failed in windows 8. I think with 10 they will ultimately achieve success.

I doubt they are interested much in profitability that much from domestic users on the OS, cloud services is where they will concentrate on, office 365, xbox live and cloud storage. They will move increasingly into hardware and the surface with docking station model is where they will see the future for desktop.

For what it is worth I see apple's OS as extremely dated looking. Apple have lost vision now like MS did 10 years ago.

When Microsoft do bring out the surface phone and you can slot that into a docking station to be used as a desktop that is the ultimate game changer.

OSX is in no way superior to Windows.
