Agencies aren't interested in part-time, because there's less money in it for the same amount of effort. Clients are often interested in having part-timers, but don't ask for them because the agencies have no-one wanting to do part-time on their books, and most contractors want a 3 month, 5 day a week contract at least.

The only way around this is by contacting clients directly yourself. I work part time on a number of different projects.

Part time gigs are like hens teeth and in nearly all cases they are negotiated off the back of exiting relationships with clients. The chance of a client wanting you to work the same hours you can offer are almost slim to nil as well.

Keep looking though, very occasionally they could pop up but I certainly wouldn't be banking on this for my income.

I would have thought part IT support would have been even harder as you are at the mercy of the SLA and the business rather than just do a bit here and there... but don't quote me on that, you are already on reduced hours for one support gig so can't be cast in stone I guess.

    Part time contracting

    Hi all,

Hello to all and great forum - I'm currently wading through everything trying to get up-to-speed

I originally started out as a vanilla IT Support company serving local businesses but have a couple of clients that have grown into a couple of days a week each as pretty much a combined IT Manager/PM/Infrastructure role and this has led to me cutting down on my less frequent clients and probably becoming a bit complacent.

One of the clients may shortly be cutting my hours down (which is fine - no problem there) so I will have some more time available and I'm considering whether to look for more IT Support clients in the local area or possibly get another contract.

I've been out of the market a while so my question is really do part-time IT contracts exist or is it mostly full-time these days?

I'm quite open to a full-time contract - I just wondered what the current situation is.

    Advice much appreciated!

    P.
