    Probably too late but:

Are you sure you are looking at the HEAD version in the repository?

Have you refreshed your Repo-Browser after your commit

Quite often muppets new users who think they know what they are doing because "Version Management " is "Version Management" innit have both a Repo-Browser open and their Working Directory and SVN refreshes are pretty dire.
another Grrrrr is when the Repo-Browser is set to display a specific commit (other than HEAD).
Commits etc (carried out from WrkDir) all work OK but the Repo-Brwser still shows the non-head revision (without all the new commits etc)

SVN (and Tortoise) are a bag of tulipe but they are fairly predictable.
OK they do sometimes c0ck up but normally it can be explained.

In the past year for various gigs I have used TFS, SVN and Mercurial extensively.

TFS, just works and easy to understand and pretty simple yet powerful.

SVN, has a few limitations and can throw a strop for no reason and when it does you just cannot sort it out.

Mercurial, by far the best tool with great flexibility. Only drawback is the learning curve since its a bit different to others.

Previous Clientco still used starteam. It was beyond tulip. However current clientcos tfs implementation is badbut I blame the person who managers it :

SVN regularly messes up for me too, but I'm clueless on what I'm doing.

We use Ankh plugin for VS which seems pretty good.

I assume you're using the latest version, are we on 1.8 now?

One thing - don't automatically trust the overlay icons in Explorer (the little green/red ones).

If you're using Visual Studio, there are great plugins to integrate SVN/Tortoise, these work way better than anything I used in Eclipse/XCode.

Thanks chaps. I sorted it following your advice.

It still scares the bejayzus out of me.

Hello svn, I'd like to add this new directory. You're ok with that?

Sure suity, delete this random folder, you got it.

Never heard of this problem in nearly a decade of using SVN. Although when it gets in a pickle it can be a PITA as you're finding out.

Make sure you take a copy of your local folder outside the working dir and try running cleanup.

You could also get better help on the TortoiseSVN mailing list. Good luck.

You unversioned the folder. I.e. you removed it from the repository.

Make sure you copy it somewhere. Delete the folder from your disk, and then do an update. Then try adding it back.

If all else fails, do a clean checkout of the whole thing, and add your folder back.

It can get into a little bit of a twist at times. But having extensively used SourceSafe, CVS, Mercurial and GIT, SVN would still be my choice.

Not feeling that right now VM to be honest.

In the repo browser the folder has gone. Since posting I've been frantically dicking about. The current state of affairs is that I unversioned the folder in question and tried adding it back in.

If it is my fault, and I'm more than willing to accept that as I don't really know what I'm doing, then SVN is a cruel mistress. I didn't delete the folder ffs.

So why did it decide to?

    Evil software.
