So, in the end I just went with the gmail app. "As long as i can get/send email" was my B-i-L's response when questioned what he wanted to do. Seems fine when I had a quick play. My only concern is whether it will prompt him for a password at some point in the future - I've turned on 2 factor authentication so would prefer him not to be bothered having to enter a password+code, even occasionally (he'll moan).

Also needed to setup calendar access, so had to add a gmail account and sync just the calendar, then use the google syncselect url to also sync a shared calendar as well as the primary one.

One day on and not heard anything, so hopefully it's job done.

Thanks, I'll check if he is using other mail accounts on the phone and will either stick with the native mail app & use imap or try out the gmail app.

There were a lot of problems initially with iOS 7 and Gmail, entirely because Google's implementation of IMAP is so fundamentally broken that it really isn't IMAP at all. The most recent update from Apple has apparently fixed the problems. But I haven't tried it myself, so be prepared for a bit of Googling if it doesn't go smoothly

started a topic iphone + gmail

    iphone + gmail

Anyone here using an iphone with gmail ? Just wondered how they connected these days.

I have to connect my brother-in-law's iphone up to gmail (actually google apps - free edition, ios 7.x iphone), and synchronize a shared calendar. I've not used an iphone for a few years now, but I think when had one, I created an exchange account on the iphone.

Now, it seems google has stopped the ability to use the exchange option for iphones, certainly for new accounts/phones. I think it means I either have to use imap or the gmail app for iphone.

Any other options or suggestions? thanks.
