Does anyone use OSX Server VPN and Time Machine to back up remotely from the LAN?
From what I have heard most Apple solutions use Bonjour which don't work over VPN, there is conflicting evidence about what he best approach is to resolve this, has anyone else tried?

Yes the guys I know with Xserves did brag about iLOM when they got them. I don't know whether it was standard or an optional item.Originally posted by stek View PostShould be ok with a proper Apple Intel Xserve though - ISTR they have a iLOM of sorts. I let you know, I got one on order for my ever pocket-emptying home-proper-SAN project...

Thanks will take a lookOriginally posted by Sysman View PostUse the same Apple Id for both.
The Mountain Lion and early Mavericks versions of OS X Server had almost non-existent help, but it's much improved of late. Forget about the help utility within OS X Server if you've screwed up your networking though, because it's only available when you are online, and even then it's a bit iffy. Use the browser version of the help instead: OS X Server 3 help
krypted.com/mac-os-x-server is a good resource.

Yeah in using Create Clean ArchiveOriginally posted by Sysman View PostYou can for a single directory level but it's a right pain in the neck when it comes to a directory hierarchy.
But as I pointed out upthread here there's Create Clean Archive.
I've just downloaded and tested the latest version, which claims the following:
New in version 2.0:- Completely rewritten for improved speed and reliability.
- Now compatible with OS X Mavericks (10.9).
- You can now use Automator variables for the name.

Use the same Apple Id for both.Originally posted by SimonMac View PostJust got my second Mac (i5 Mac Mini, SSD) to go with my MBP, few questions, if I have bought apps through App Store on one are they valid on the other? Or do I need two accounts etc

Does that not put hidden files inside though? Afaik they contain osx specific meta-data about the files (like which app opens them etc).Originally posted by FiveTimes View PostCan you just select the stuff you want and it select compress - puff you get a zip file. Or and I missing something ?

If you use the same Apple ID you can download all your purchases to it. I'm in Hell there because I have two Apple ID's - an original one from 1999 and an @mac.com one, I've purchased stuff on both and have to keep logging in and out of the app store for updates etc. Wish Apple would merge them.Originally posted by SimonMac View PostJust got my second Mac (i5 Mac Mini, SSD) to go with my MBP, few questions, if I have bought apps through App Store on one are they valid on the other? Or do I need two accounts etc, secondly what is the best way to RDP from the MBP to the Mini, I have seen various VNC clients with mixed responses, but a few people are speaking about the inbuilt screen sharing app, is it a case of as with everything OSX KISS? Last but not least I want to use the Mac Mini as an OSX Server, so I can VPN back in when I am away, is the inbuilt VPN acceptable so I can access Time Machine and NAS else where on my home LAN?
TIA
I use Apple Remote Desktop - it's perfect.
Haven't used the VPN but you too need to purchase Server, it's only 32 quid now, used to be thousands.....
I sue logmein to get to my iMac and hop around from there. Had to buy it since it went paid-for only, couldn't get on with Teamviewer....
Think VPN might be overkill....

I've started using Divvy. Pretty handy if you have lots of windows open and want to resize them neatly and easily.
