As vetran says, MS IIS SMTP server.
Set the authentication to Windows, and limit the IP address to the sender machine IP address.
No worries about spam relay.

use IIS smtp.
Lock it down to only receive from one IP address etc (option in config).
use Blat to test and keep it handy in a bat file when you doubt the server is working. Or test via telnet if you have face hair and sandals.

As the others have said. Open, unauthenticated relays are a strict no no. It will get discovered and flooded with traffic from spammers and then your domain/firewall external ip addresses will get blacklisted and your real email will get killed.Originally posted by Sysman View PostWSS. I once configured one which came with relay switched on by default. Before I'd waded through enough documentation to find out how to switch it off, someone had found the relay and started using it.
Fortunately I looked at the logs before my ISP noticed, and disabled it at the router until I got the config sorted.
You can knock up a fairly stable smtp service using a virtual machine, damn small Linux and a few additional deb packages. You can then configure the server to take the messages but not send them.
Out of interest why are you testing with an unauthenticated server surely in production the server wont be an open relay?

We used to use Hamster for quick testing of products that needed to connect to an SMTP server.

Sendmail is the unix mta of choice, just about standard on any flavour. It's not for the faint of heart tho, and needs a fair bit of config, the old sendmail.cf which you are not supposed to edit but everyone does. It's free though and there's prolly a windows version too.Originally posted by Spacecadet View PostHave you used these? I was looking for recommendations rather than just google results!
